About the Role
The Protection Engineer plays a critical role in the delivery of RSGx electrical and commissioning projects by providing specialist expertise in protection of system design, configuration, testing, and commissioning. This position ensures that protection schemes for HV and LV systems are safe, reliable, and compliant with client and statutory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering & Technical Delivery
- Develop, review, and implement protection schemes for high-voltage (HV) and low-voltage (LV) systems, including transmission, distribution, and industrial networks.
- Conduct protection coordination and grading studies, relay setting calculations, and fault studies using industry-standard software (e.g. ETAP, PowerFactory).
- Prepare protection and control drawings, logic diagrams, and settings documentation.
- Perform factory acceptance tests (FAT), site acceptance tests (SAT), and commissioning of protection and control systems.
- Diagnose and rectify protection-related issues during construction and commissioning phases.
- Support the development and execution of testing procedures and commissioning plans.
Compliance & Quality
- Ensure all protection systems meet Australian Standards (AS/NZS 3000, AS 2067, AS 61850, etc.), client specifications, and RSGx quality requirements.
- Maintain accurate documentation and testing records to support verification and validation.
- Contribute to internal quality and safety audits related to electrical protection systems.
Collaboration & Support
- Work closely with electrical engineers, commissioning teams, and project managers to deliver integrated project outcomes.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and commissioning technicians.
- Liaise with clients, OEMs, and network service providers to ensure alignment of protection philosophies and requirements.
Health, Safety, Environment & Community (HSEC)
- Promote and uphold RSGx’s safety culture, ensuring all work is carried out in accordance with HSEC policies and procedures.
- Identify and manage risks associated with electrical protection and commissioning activities.
About You
- Electrical Engineering Degree.
- Experienced in testing and commissioning of Distribution and Transmission voltage levels.
- Competent in the suite of Omicron, Doble and Megger Test Equipment.
- Good communicator who is confident to be client-facing and able to work independently.
